SANCTUAIRE DE FLEURS, A Maison publishes FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES as an extension of its commitment to authorship, preservation, and the enduring cultural record of fragrance.
The Maison was founded on the belief that fragrance carries more than aroma. It carries memory, artistry, labor, history, identity, and legacy. While fragrance has long been celebrated for its beauty, many of the people, traditions, materials, and institutions that shape it remain largely undocumented or known only within the industry’s most private circles. The stories behind the work are often treated as secondary to the work itself.
FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES was established to help preserve that record.
As the editorial publication of the Maison, it exists to document the people, ideas, craftsmanship, and cultural forces that define fragrance and beauty. It explores the artistry of perfumery, the work of growers and producers, the evolution of luxury, the institutions that shape the industry, and the individuals whose contributions deserve thoughtful examination and lasting recognition.
Anchored in the artists, artisans, and thinkers of fragrance throughout the African diaspora, FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES is committed to documenting creative lives that have too often existed beyond the written record. It recognizes that the history of fragrance cannot be fully understood without the voices, traditions, innovations, and cultural contributions of those whose work has seldom been afforded the same permanence as the world’s most celebrated houses. Through interviews, essays, criticism, and historical inquiry, the publication seeks to preserve these contributions while remaining engaged with the broader global fragrance community.
The publication is equally committed to preserving the story of the Maison itself. Every fragrance house leaves behind more than its creations. It leaves correspondence, philosophy, creative process, milestones, and the ideas that shaped its work. These become part of the cultural record. FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES serves as an archive of SANCTUAIRE DE FLEURS while reaching beyond the Maison to chronicle the broader world of fragrance and beauty with the same editorial rigor.
Publishing is not new to the Maison.
Long before founding SANCTUAIRE DE FLEURS, Serene B. Hollingsworth founded and published Bahiyah Woman and Black Girlz magazines, creating editorial platforms dedicated to documenting the lives, accomplishments, and perspectives of Black communities. That commitment to publishing continues through FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES, where fragrance becomes a lens through which larger conversations about culture, luxury, history, identity, artistry, labor, and institutional influence are explored.
Luxury has long been defined by discretion, restraint, and carefully guarded access. Those qualities have contributed to its enduring allure, yet they have also left many of its artists, makers, and contributors outside the historical record. FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES approaches luxury with deep respect while recognizing that preserving its history is itself an act of stewardship. To document the work is not to diminish its mystique. It is to ensure that the people who shaped it are remembered.
Although published by SANCTUAIRE DE FLEURS, FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES maintains its own editorial voice and purpose. It is not a catalogue, a brand journal, or a vehicle for commercial promotion. It is an independent editorial publication committed to rigorous research, thoughtful criticism, meaningful conversation, and the careful documentation of fragrance as one of the world’s most significant cultural expressions.
By publishing FRAGRANCE PERSPECTIVES, SANCTUAIRE DE FLEURS affirms that a Maison can contribute more than fragrance alone. It can preserve knowledge, cultivate dialogue, document creative lives, and expand the historical record. In doing so, the Maison embraces publishing as another expression of its purpose: ensuring that the artistry, people, and ideas shaping fragrance today remain part of the conversations that endure tomorrow.
